Sega has officially confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 is indeed coming to the Nintendo Wii via the WiiWare service. An announcement trailer is also available to watch.

The mysterious “Project Needlemouse” is actually a brand new series of episodic Sonic games that sees the return to its 2D roots. The classic Spin Dash move makes a return, as will the ability to destroy enemies using the Homing Attack. Inspired by the Mega Drive era, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will feature a variety of different zones and a collection of special stages.

Gamers will be able to replay their favourite stages by selecting them on the main menu. Expect many battles with new bosses, as well as the return of Dr. Eggman. Scheduled for release in Summer 2010, the game will also be available on the Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and at least one other yet-to-be announced platform.
