Konami officially announces its new horror game that’s bound for the Nintendo Wii. Developed by Hudson Soft, this new title aims to re-define the horror genre.

Calling promises to immerse gamers in its terrifying storyline by utilising “unique interactive elements” and “innovative adventure concepts”. Being a horror game, naturally it will contain many traps and mysteries along the way.

Gamers will begin the game trapped in a strange room. The wii-mote will double as the on-screen mobile phone that belongs to the game’s protagonist. Using a torch to explore and investigate your dimly-lit surroundings, you will receive mysterious phone calls to your handset; which you answer by raising the wii-mote to your ear. This simple action is the basis that sets Calling apart from any other horror game; as not only does it then feel like you’re holding an actual mobile phone, you’ll hear ghostly voices via the wii-mote’s speaker.

The game revolves around the urban legend of the “Page of black” website. Rumour has it that anyone who has visited the site died from a coma brought on by an unknown cause. The site consists of a black page with a numeric counter in the centre but is linked to a low-key chatroom.

Not everyone can enter the chat room, but on doing so, the player’s psyche starts to receive calls from ‘Abyss’,. They then enter a state of limbo in a place known as ‘Border’ which is seemingly located between life and death.

There are several areas within the “Border” which are inhabited by spirits. These spirits are able to contact their various feelings via the character’s mobile phone. Not only do they think it’s good to talk, they occasionally lash out and attack you. Damn spirits, always doing this. Anyway, avoiding them is the best thing to do, but you must also attempt to solve the mysteries of the “Border” if you’re to find an escape route out of the place.

It certainly sounds great, as the type of interaction Calling hopes to achieve sounds unique and very creepy. “The fear generated by the received phone calls and the eerie location serve to create a tense, nightmarish situation”. Mixing puzzles and and exploration, Calling is developed by Hudson Soft and will be distributed by Konami. It is currently scheduled for release in early 2010 for the Nintendo Wii.
