Bionic Commando is one of the many 3rd party titles on the NES that people loved to play and with its recent remake being release on Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network and PC, We at WiiDS.co.uk pondered in leather chairs in front of a roaring fire while sipping from a single malt whisky-
Could and should this game be made on the Wii?
It’s definitely something I’ve wondered since I purchased the game on my 360. The game itself is absolutely brilliant with beautifully coloured scenery, amazing music and complex yet easy to master puzzles. But why couldn’t this of made it over to the Nintendo pond? Many would consider it only fair to have a remake of a classic NES title on Nintendo’s current system isn’t it? How about just the original then?

For months before release of Bionic Commando Rearmed, many Nintendophiles got angry at Capcom for not bringing Bionic Commando, the original NES game, to the Virtual Console. Capcom’s Ben Judd went on to say in an interview with 1up.com that the problem wasn’t with Capcom, but with Nintendo who refused the idea which lead people to believe Nintendo had issues with the violent content in the game and the severe Nazi references.
These problems seemed quite believable, especially as Nintendo have had problems with Nazi references in the past such as Luc Bernard’s DS game “Imagination is the Only Escape” in which the protagonist is a young Jewish boy in Nazi-occupied France. Soon after its first announcement Nintendo stated it would not be released in America but may have a future release in Europe and Asia. Is this the same problem Nintendo had with Bionic Commando for Virtual Console and the Rearmed remake?

For those who don’t know Bionic Commando is based around Radd Spencer, who is sent behind enemy lines to try to rescue Super Joe who gets kidnapped while trying to stop a group working on a project called ‘The Albatross’ which is later revealed to be the plans to resurrect Adolf Hitler and world domination. With that in mind it’s easy to see that Nintendo could have refused to release both the Virtual Console Game and the Remake due to their strong Nazi storyline even though most of this was taken out in the new rearmed game.
Since the release last week, Bionic Commando Rearmed has seen great success on 360, PS3 and PC. But why was the Wii never considered? It has indeed got some issues when it comes to graphics but that isn’t too hard for Capcom to do if they are doing a similar thing with Dead Rising. Capcom recently said they weren’t planning on a Wii version in their community blog but for what reason?

To get back to the original questions first pondered here, Could this game be made on Wii? The answer is simply yes. If the developers see fit, any game can be made for Wii with the right team. Controls could be using either a Wiimote or Classic Controller with leaderboards and Challenge rooms just like the current version. There literally is nothing stopping Capcom from making it as long as Nintendo gives it the go ahead.
Should this game be made for Wii? Possibly, but how would we really benefit? While it’s true the game is stunning, its more than likely a large amount of users have bought the game for their other systems and are happy with the purchase. You don’t hear Wii owners complain that they want Fat Princess or Braid on the Wii because they are happy to have it elsewhere but with Bionic Commando its almost like people feel betrayed by Capcom for moving platforms.
The answers to these questions are just what we here at WiiDS.co.uk think. Bionic Commando was a great game in the 90’s and Rearmed is a great game now. Rearmed could of made it to Wii but do we really need it? We think probably not and hey, at least we are getting Mega Man 9.
