Masahiro Sakurai recently discussed the prospect of having to consider a Smash Bros. sequel in the future. This comes as somewhat of a revelation as the same man had reportedly stated that the Smash Bros franchise’s first outing on the Wii was to be its last appearance on our systems. Ever! Forever? Forever ever? Well, yes it seemed that way, much to the disappointment of gamers worldwide, especially given the top notch quality of the most recent instalment.
Sakurai has expressed concerns that he may have to consider ideas for a potential sequel after admitting that certain undisclosed features and characters had to be cut due to time constraints which left the door open to considering work on a sequel as these undisclosed features would enable a follow-up to have the necessary variation and depth to justify its development.
Sakurai said “It’s taken over three years to make Brawl but I actually stopped trying to include new ideas early on in development…..Sadly, we had to trim out many great concepts just to keep within the time constraints….
To ensure that a sequel was viable, Sakurai said that he would “have to draw a line in the sand and have a new approach…. As long as the fans enjoy it, though, that’s what matters and in the distant future, I guess that might be something I have to consider.”
