It appears that the recent update for the Wii didn’t only close the data hole which was found in Twilight Princess, allowing users to run homebrew games and applications on the system. Another casualty was the Freeloader, a disk manufatured by Datel which ultimately made the Wii “region-free”.
Whilst before the patch gamers could play imported copies of some games unavailable in their own territory (such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl in Europe… not long now though!), it appears that the disk is now nothing more than an expensive beverage coaster.
Nintendo are remaining quiet on the subject, reiterating that “because it isn’t an official product approved by Nintendo, there was nothing it could do”.
Could this be the end of the Freeloader? Guess we’ll have to wait and see…

The Freeloader is dead (at least in the short term), exactly why I waited for euro release of Brawl, a pity, but given that Ninty will likely put this update on every new game and force you to install it to even play them, unless you want to never buy a new Wii game again your somewhat screwed.
The bigger casualty is until a new hack is filtered down to the masses, the homebrew channel is dead unless you already had it installed.

I dont understand why they have the cheek to region code it in the first place - what if someone wants to take their wii abroad.
and to block a properly marketed product because they dont like it…well!! Third party games developers beware Nintendo want this high price market all sewn up for themselves
