As someone outside of the age range this product is intended for, I was incredibly surprised at how hard it is to put this game down. Crayola Treasure Adventures consists of two key modes, a story mode and a creativity mode. The narrative drive of the game is found in the story mode which takes you on a treasure hunt across the world and into various locations. You follow your friend Tipp (the reddest of red of colouring crayons) who is determined to find out why someone has been stealing the colour away from the inhabitants of the world, and return it back to them. Based on three recurring situations; the player must solve puzzles, fix items with a dot to dot graph and rapidly colour in important objects and people which have lost their colouration. Although repetitive after a while, the story mode is highly addictive and is hard to put down from beginning to end, driving you to completion much more than many of the more serious games out there.
In the second mode, the game allows you to be your own virtual Picasso with over a hundred different puzzles and crayons to choose from. You first choose from a predefined selection of templates; a lion, a fire truck etc, then you are able to colour it in with your stylus. The mode gives you various options of drawing tools such as a crayon or a pen and each one changes the level of virtual colour dropped onto the page. You are allowed to colour in certain sections rather than the whole thing which isn’t exactly realistic but it does erase the frustration of going over the edges! It is frustrating how you can’t even save your masterpieces onto the cartridge though to recall your memories later, let alone place your creations onto a virtual fridge magnet.
Crayola is possibly one of the most recognizable brands from the younger life of the Western world. The image and branding so nostalgic that it can’t help but bring back memories of hours spent making sure not to colour over the lines and letting creativity run free with no limits. Treasure Adventures brings this creativity to a digital format and erases the limits of it’s real life brethren. Although at the same time not being a replacement, Crayola Treasure Adventures is a great product and will be irresistible to it’s target audience.
