Well, not a bad way to start the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2008 for Disney Interactive, who had just announced a new DS online service called DGamer. This service allows the user to create their own Disney-related profiles, persona, track accomplishments and correspond and trade items via Wi-Fi Connection.
Here’s how the service works. When you insert a DGamer-enabled cart into your DS, you’ll have the option to sign up for the service — minors have limited access and adults can authorize more access by providing a credit card number for age verification.
Once connected, you’ll create a handle and customize your avatar, choosing from a number of different Disney-themed clothing items and accessories (Buzz Lightyear, Narnia, Mickey, etc.). DGamer members can then use the free service to compare ‘honors,’ that they’ve accumulated from playing DGamer-enabled games or chat about games or general topics. Conversations are monitored by Disney moderators. DGamer account holders can also access the service from a PC.
While the service is being focused predominately on the DS, Disney is interested in bringing over a similar concept to the Nintendo Wii later on. DGamer will release, coinciding with the opening of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian in May.
