Over the past few months, the Wii has been selling very well and has been unavailable at most retail stores because of the trend. This has led to some speculation in critics that Nintendo is intentionally not putting out as many units, in order to receive good press. The company has commented here on this saying…
We are strongly reject and resent the accusation that we are “PR-ing” stock shortages and no press releases are being distributed. We are doing all we can to ensure that the unprecedented demand for Wii can be met as far as possible in the run up to Christmas. This is being done through regular and multiple deliveries of Wii stock to the UK, globally we are working at maximum capacity, producing 1.8 million units of Wii hardware a month to try and meet this demand as far as possible.”
Nintendo’s a good company, and I don’t think that they’d do intentionally withhold units for PR. Why do that when they’re selling like crazy?

I most certainly wasn’t blaming them for this on the lone matters of press. I was under the impression that this was a marketing strategy, same used by Scion to sell their cars through “underground-styled” adverts and marketing.
