You’ve probably seen the classic “Galaga” up for grabs on the VC. Well, now you can play Galaga ‘90, with updated graphics and fresh options.

Rather than scrolling over the same starry field like the previous Galaga, ‘90 gives a new look, by scrolling onto a new static image for each stage, showing planets, asteroids and space stations among other rather than the original’s starry field. Sprites have been given an update, using the TurboGrafx16’s power, giving the ships more depth.

The is, for the most part, no background music, except for bonus stages and the game over screen. The sound effects seem like they’re the same as the original galaga, but louder and clearer.

This game gains some new features, such as the option to play as a double ship, two ships side by side, from the outset, as opposed to the original requiring a ship be captured first, then later liberating it, being quite a difficult task. Not to mention there is now a triple ship possible for even more fun. Plus there are now power ups to collect, stuff that allows the player to skip stages or an instant triple ship. Not only that, they now add some vertical scrolling stages too.

Even if you have the original on the VC, it wouldn’t count against you should you download this becoming title.
