Virtual Fighter 2

Its difficult to not argue that Virtual Fighter is one of the hugest fighting franchises in video game history. The only problem is that one game, Virtual Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive was terrible and under shadowed, and should stay honestly that way.

I did not have the luxury of playing the arcade version (or Saturn), but from what I’ve seen and heard, this Mega Drive-VC transition will just make any VF fanboy weep in sadness. The arcade version and Saturn versions were fully 3D, with impressive character models and arenas at the time. Apparently the version we received was the watered down Mega Drive game which is technically flawed compared to the other platforms’ Virtual Fighter 2.

Virtual Fighter 2 has a catalog of 11 fighters, introducing two new characters to the series, Lion Rafale and Shun Di. After choosing your character (and difficulty), you’ll be pitted against the other fighters. And if you haven’t guessed it already, the flaws boggle down on the gameplay. The combat is terribly slow-paced, the move list is limited and unimpressive and the physics are a bit awkward. Each character must have bricks tied to their legs, as they cannot run or even walk at a normal pacing. But then again, the fighters can jump at least 15ft in the air, making your perfectly vulnerable to counter-attacks. All of it doesn’t add up, and I can’t find the sense of thinking anything positive about Virtual Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive.

Virtual Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive shouldn’t even exist because of how superior the arcade version was. This game is tedious, technically flawed and awfully shallow in the gameplay. It doesn’t destroy the series’ reputation, so I’m don’t care at all.

Overall Score: 3.75/10
