Bloody Wolf is a side scrolling shooter created by Data East for the TurboGrafx 16 back in 1988. Setting chaos and rage through seven missions, you control two commandos of the Bloody Wolf squad whose mission is to save the president (cliche enough?). But does the game have enough explosives to nail a high score?
To summarize the entire point of the game, you must shoot up several enemy insurgents and rescue fellow hostages that enjoy telling you “obvious” information instead of anything secretly leaked. The game does itself justice by putting in a sundry of weapons and items to aid you in the fight such as bazookas and body armor. The game is played from a sky view, so you can seek the landscape for more obstacles and terrorists to shoot up. The concept is pretty simple, but the difficulty is not. The music has a dark tone and it matches the mood of the game, since its all about killing and blood shed.
My only problem with Bloody Wolf is how frustrating and difficult the game can be. To be dandy and courteous, the game gives you three health bars that will hopefully last until you pick up something to replenish it. But when all are depleted, you have to start the level all over. The lack of check points and extra ammunition for better weapons adds to the debacle you’ll get yourself in. The machine gun you start off with is pretty powerful, but the shooting range is short, and it doesn’t have the spread like the shotgun (which is very useful). Enemy insurgents will literally flood the screen, causing your to make impracticable decisions such as spraying and decaying. Bullet wounds are less likely the reason to die, because mis-jumps on barb wires and flying motor vehicles will do the trick. On an irrelevant subject, the english dubbing is terrible. This isn’t much of a complaint, but its hard not to laugh at people who can’t talk at a 8th grade level.
Bloody Wolf is a decent shooter that blends the traditional side scrolling shooter with unpredictable deaths and circumstances. This game is worth a purchase, but only if you won’t pull your hair out.
Overall Score: 6.5/10
