Wii Beating Out Japanese Evening Television?

As the Wii popularity rises to new heights, others suffer at the face of success. We don’t often hear complaints like this, but it is believed that the success has begun to steal away “prime time” television audiences in Japan.

It hasn’t been a concern until one senior executive of a tv commercial station came to other executives with terrifying figures of audience-tracking. For the first time in a long time, Japanese television failed to capture more than nine percent of audience share.

“The quality of programming has always been a little cyclical in Japan, but there has never been a period of decline like the one we are seeing now. There are outside factors at work. One is people watching TV on their cell phones where we can’t track them, but the really big factor is the time people are spending on the Wii,” an executive of TBS, another major commercial channel, said. He added that the “theft” of audiences was taking place because television producers and programming directors were used only to the idea of competing for time with other channels.

Its a rainy day to see a video game console beat out Sony’s PS3 3-1, but its a storm to see evening television fail to a $10 (its a lot cheaper to make, believe me) controller.
