Review
First released in 1987, Mega Man as a series has become one of Capcom’s greatest achievements in the gaming world.
Voted as one of the most difficult games on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Mega Man also managed to spawn up to seven sequels and many other canon franchises.
Set in the year 200X (a variable perhaps) Mega Man consists of 6 stages, each with its own ‘boss’ character at the end. Just like your average platforming title, the game keeps track of a numerical score (which is in fact pointless in Mega Man) as well as life points so that you can tell just how badly you are performing.
When you first start the game you choose between which enemies levels you wish to challenge first, as you play through them you are faced with numerous amounts of bad dudes who can’t wait to take away your life. Seeing as the game has no passwords or battery like system the only way to save your game is to exit to the Wii menu so that you can pick up where you left off at a later time and date. Although this is definitely a modern advantage, I feel for you guys who had to play this game non stop to the finish.
Graphically, Mega Man was pretty average for its time. The NES only allowed for a few colours on screen at any one time and this is reflected with the games one colour skys. Musically too this game is very retro, actually becoming an influence to many ‘chip’ artists today because of Mega Man’s influential and cult status.
Although the game is pretty fun, it’s highly annoying when you lose all your life points and have to start the level again from the beginning. Having the Wii’s natural save function for VC games really helps but apart from that, the harsh difficulty of the first Mega Man makes it a little hard to get into.
