We just received the official word from Nintendo in regards to the post we made earlier about the new original content downloads via the Wii.
As well as clarifying a few things, Nintendo were keen to stress that the service will allow brand new developers to get a chance at the limelight, ultimately leaving players to decide which titles become best sellers, presumably via word of mouth and sites like these.
With the success of games such as ‘Alien Hominid’ over the years it really goes to show how powerful grass roots games development is becoming. Clearly with something as inventive as the Wii, small time developers could find themselves becoming even more alienated as they are expected to come out with very large titles which they could not afford. With something like the ‘Wii Software’ service, Nintendo are giving a chance to those bedroom programmers and smaller indie companies to get their creativity out into the world in a cheap and affordable way.
The reduced barriers to development provide developers the freedom to create and an inexpensive, clearly defined path to reach consumers who will ultimately determine which game will become the Next Big Thing.
Nothing has been revealed apart from the existence and rules of the service yet. Nintendo assured us that more information will be unveiled closer to the service launching. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the things that will be available for the system, lets just hope something as inventive and minimalist as ‘Boom Boom Rocket’ becomes available.
