Mercury Meltdown Revolution ScreenshotMercury Meltdown Revolution is a highly-addictive puzzle game where the player must guide a colour-shifting blob of mercury through endless mazes of hazards and obstacles to reach the goal.

Each maze is based around a ‘lab’, which has it’s own cartoon looks and feel, and contains it’s own hazards and puzzles to solve, including having to split up your mercury into several blobs and control them all at the same time in order to complete a maze.

Mercury Meltdown Revolution ScreenshotAs an extra feature to just mazes and pressure switches, the player must also change the colour of their blob, and learn how to mix colours using the light spectrum in order to progress through certain levels. This is possible using special colour-changer machines which will change the colour of your mercury blob, so at times you first have to split your blob, then change the colours of each piece of mercury independently before remerging your blob to achieve colours which are unavailable through just using a colour-changing machine.

There are many other machines which both help and hinder your progress too, such as attractors and repulsors which try their best to upset your course of travel, state changers which will either make your blob a solid ball or split up a lot more easily, and nasties such as Mercoids and Schizoids who will give chase and try to take you out.

The control scheme for MMR is one of the best I have experienced in a Wii game of it’s type. Previous titles using the Wii-remote as a controller of the world (such as Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz) seem to be far too sensitive, whereas MMR has the controls just right. This is especially evident whilst trying to manoeuvre your blob down the edge of an abyss.

Mercury Meltdown Revolution ScreenshotThe controller is held in sideways-mode throughout, which makes the game very comfortable to play.

The graphics in MMR take on a cell-shaded kind of look, which really works well in this game. Everything looks very colourful and cartoony, and the mercury always looks shiny and metal-like no matter how big or small your blob is. The menu’s are very easy to navigate and getting into the game is a quick and pleasant affair.

There are also some bonus party games to be unlocked in MMR, which follow with the Mercury theme.

  • Rodeo - The player must keep their blob on the tray without being blown off by the fan.
  • Paint - Paint more ground area than your opponent. to win the game
  • Shove - Similar to curling, the player must shove their blob down the table and stop it on a target.
  • Race - Simple as it sounds, the player must race their blob to get the fastest time.
  • Metrix - This game is a puzzle game in itself!

High Points

- Very smooth and easy to use control system
- Great colourful graphics and sounds
- Very easy to play

Low Points

- Some of the levels are especially difficult!
- Party games must be unlocked before being playable
- No online support (download new mazes etc).

I really enjoyed my time with Mercury Meltdown Revolution for the Wii, and I know it is a game I will keep going back to. The game is very user-friendly, and once a couple of party games have been unlocked, provides some great multiplayer fun.
