The Nintendo Wii is the unorthidox console of this generation, blooming with popularity and unit sales. What can deprive of it’s success is the doubts of pessimists who percieve the popularity as a temporary applause. Vice President of Marketing for Sega U.S, Scott Steinberg has doubts about the Wii’s longevity noting that it’ll be unlikely to succeed within the next year. GamesIndustry reports on the matter:
“I am a little concerned about the creative depth of the Wii pool,” he told Reuters. “I’m not sure if they will top out in 2008 or 2007.”
He also notes the motion-sensing capabilities.
“How much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or 5 years from now, or 10 years from now?” Steinberg said.
“How can they design products that aren’t too derivative of what’s already out there?”
Steinburg suggests that the Playstation 3 will ultimately win this console war. So whether the Sony bundle of joy can get out of the ditch of low sales will have to be viewed in the near future. And to add more fuel to the fire, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter told GamesIndustry that he agrees with the Sega Vice President, noting the Wii is nothing more than a fad.
“I think that a lot of people consider the Wii a “fad”, and attribute that conclusion to the type of people who have been attracted to the Wii so far,” Pachter said, observing that many publishers “don’t know what to do with” the new demographics of female and older gamers.
To show more distrust to the Wii longevity, he added the possibility of the system’s successor in the very near future.
“It’s easy to envision a Wii 2 in a couple of years that runs at full HD, and has both a Wii-mote and an analog controller, so that all games can be ported to it. If Nintendo were to introduce such a device, it would be fully comparable to the Xbox 360 - perhaps it wouldn’t have Blu-ray, so a comparison to the PS3 may be unfair - and would likely have most of the same third party content as the other two devices.”
Michael Pachter also believes the Playstation 3 will win the console war. So…will the Nintendo Wii lose it’s appeal, or will the console continue to stand bright and outsold at most retail stores? Mark your calenders and play the waiting games folks, this may take a while!
