Two hundred years after humanity begun exploring space, a comet entered our solar system, estimated to miss the earth by 1.2 Billion kilometers. Several probes were sent to investigate the comet, however the comet begun to seek out the probes and destroy them, then set its sight on earth. Acting quickly, the UN deployed Orbital Altering Missles to divert it into the moon, where it was soon discovered that the comet was actually a large alien military fleet.

I have hardly ever seen a better use of parallax scrolling till I played this game, seeing possibly 5, 6 or maybe even more layers being used for an excellent visual effect. The enemy designs are both either organic or mecha, yet not really both at the same time, giving it an interesting effect. As with most shooters on the TurboGrafx16, it really holds it’s own when there are some 15 plus enemies on screen and doesn’t slow down.

The game’s music is quite enjoyable, it is different from the Hudson shooters, but all the while being great in it’s own little way. While you’re playing, you don’t have to worry about any sound effects, done excellently, and like the graphics, suffers not a bit from slowdown or lag.

Overall, the basis of the game is simple, and while being graphically superior to a lot of other shooters, it lacks some innovation. Despite this, it is still a pretty solid game, fairly difficult, however, if you can build up the upgrades, it becomes a whole lot easier.

R-Type III may be a better way to go, but if you’re just looking for a regular shooter, then definitely get this.
