This game is quite similar to the ever popular arcade game, Joust. If you have never heard of Joust, then quit living under that rock. The object of the game is to collide against an opponent while having a slightly higher altitude than the enemy, in order to pop their balloon, then tackle them while they are on the ground before they get another balloon ready.
For a game that arrived quite early in the NES’ life, it boasts some pretty nice graphics. Nice starry backgrounds and plenty of relatively large sprites. The Balloon Trip mode is even better looking, with all these electric traps in the way.
Being an arcade port, with the game having two modes, among them are a few tunes and a handfull of sound effects, however, these are pretty good, and I even after a while, I was pleased to learn my memory of the music hasn’t changed.
This has gameplay similar to Joust, and thus plays out just like an arcade game, so every level gets progressively harder, with stronger enemies, and when you reach a certain level, it begins recycling old stages. It also has a very addictive Balloon Trip mode, in which you must constantly stay aloft in a side scrolling world, I have played it many times, but I still cannot beat it.
This game is really good, and the physics are excellent, this classic is definitely worth a download, for those who have and have not played it alike.
