Review
Nes Open Tournament Golf was released for the NES back in 1991. Spanning a various amount of sequels (such as Toadstool Tour and Advance Tour), this game brought so much originality to all following golf titles. Nes Open Tournament Golf did for Tiger Woods as Punch Out! did for Fight Night.
When the player enters the main menu, they are hit with a robust of options and courses to participate in. To start playing some golf, your have three choices: Stroke Play, Match Play and Tournament mode. Entering these modes will have the player tour to the U.S, Japan and the UK. Open Tournament Golf is built around improving your reputation and ranking, so depending on how you golf will ultimately determine how you progress through the game. What I must praise is how beefy and engaging Open Tournament can become after playing just a few rounds.
When it comes to golfing, no complaints can be said. Like all golf games that exist today, you have a bounding meter on the bottom of your screen that records the quality of your hits. From your HUD, you can choose your clubs, direction of collision and the angle you want to hit the golf ball. The overall gameplay mechanics are lucid and you’ll be flying through 18+ holes per tour.
So what happens after you play a couple rounds of golf? At the main menu, you can enter the Clubhouse option. From there, you can choose your clubs, check your stats, train and much more! From this menu, you can also talk to a clerk (Donkey Kong reincarnation) to enter in your cash prize and earn some valuable goodies. With a sundry of tools and whistles, replay value is inevitable.
From the top of my head, I cannot think of any reason anyone would abhor Nes Open Tournament Golf. The golfing mechanics are superb, not showing any age despite being made 16 years ago. The game is packed with extra content, so you’ll be playing some classic golf for quite a long time. Open Tournament Golf hits it’s way for a perfect rating, so buy it now!
Overall Score: 10/10
