With more funk than a funktopus, ToeJam and Earl bust onto the scene in 1992 with their debut game for the Megadrive. The sequel ‘Panic on Funkotron’ is actually a much more intriguing game and was definitely a notable title for the machine.

‘So what does the second game do differently’ I hear you speak, well first of all, this game is a 2D platformer like your Sonics or your Marios but with an extra, funkadelic twist. Secondly, along with the genre change, ToeJam & Earl 2 contains a different setting for the pair. The game tells the story of ToeJam and Earl’s quest to rid their home planet Funkotron of the human scum who have somehow managed to hitchhike their way there using their space ship.

Not only is ToeJam & Earl 2 a great platformer it also has a great theme, the music and the clothes - even the words of the characters in the game all help to create a cartoon like context which really reminds me of the early nineties. Not very often is it possible for a game to evoke memories of a certain time period but ‘Panic in Funkotron’ really does have a certain nostalgic element to it.

As a platforming title the game stands up quite well to its opponents with extra minigames and more moves (you can teleport through walls using the funk!) than your typical game of ‘run and jump’ .

Although the game can actually get a little repetitive quickly (as with the majority of platformers), I’m pretty sure you’ll have fun throwing jars at humans for quite a while. If not well, just ask Nintendo for your funk back right?
