Review

Mario and Luigi have faced many adventures together. They’ve partied it out in playing boards. They’ve battled their enemies in paper form. They’ve reached Bowser’s castle, only to receive the message: ” I’m sorry, but our princess is in another castle.” Now, the Mario brothers must face their toughest challenge… They must travel back in time with their baby counterparts in order to save the Mushroom Kingdom (what a surprise) from the evil invasion of the Shroobs, and battle it out with the Shroob Princess in this RPG adventure! But little did they know that who they thought to be the Shroob Princess, wasn’t…

Control: Let’s see. The controls for this game are as follows: Mario:A, Luigi:B, Baby Mario:X, Baby Luigi:Y. Simple enough? Usually you only jump with these buttons, but throughout the game, the brothers must sometimes disband in order to perform certain actions, such as the spin jump, the baby drill, or having Baby Mario grow 10x his normal size, just by drinking one drop of water. In-battle, the controls are pretty much the same. Sometimes, however, combos might prove to be difficult, even for the pro gamer. 9.0/10

Graphics: There’s something the DS is perfect at. Making 2-D games. Partners in Time’s graphics are just that. I can’t really find any flaws in the game’s graphics. The character designs and environment is also well done. The Yoshis, Baby Bowser, Kamek, Shroobs, everything looks good! However, this game, even though good looking, didn’t use all of the DS’s potential and for that reason, I can’t give it a 10. 9.5/10

Sound: The music in this game… I love it. Some of the music is original, while other is music is remixed. Simple enough, they are enjoyable, except for sometimes, the battle music might get on your nerves. The voices, they crack me up. Luigi can get into some of the worst situations, and start crying. I start laughing. There is however, one thing about the sound. EVERY SINGLE SHROOB sounds the same. The princess, the little dudes, the big lollipop monster, all of them have the same voice.
8.0/10

Other Stuff: The battle system is turn-based (it’s an RPG, duh). You have the ability to dodge, and in some occasions, counter your opponents’ moves. Some enemies only have one move, while other have an entire movepool. As for you, there are 2 basic attack methods: The jump and later, the hammer. You also have the ability to use various items, such as the classic green shell, or the pocket chomp. Throughout the overworld part of the game, you will need to use abilities, such as the Spin Ball to get through certain obstacles. The dialogue in this game is also very good.

Highs:
- Great Dialogue
- Good 2-D graphics
- creative plot

Lows:
- compared to Superstar Saga, it is not as fun
- battling might get repetitive in some stages

Memorable Moments (might contain spoilers): Now this is a new feature in my reviews. I will list some of the funniest/scariest/coolest moment during the game. One moment I really liked in this game was when the Hammer Bros. start talking in L33T. “We will pwn j00!”. Not a moment, but throughout the game, Luigi tends to get in the worst of situations, and hey? Can you blame the guy?

Conclusion: Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is a great RPG. It is definitely worth a buy for ANY RPG fan. If you liked Saga, buy this game. If you like Paper Mario, buy this game. If you freaking like FINAL FANTASY buy this game.

This game gets a 9.3/10 from JuanotheGamer.
