Released for the first time in 1991/2 on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Mario & Yoshi (simply ‘Yoshi’ in America) is a puzzle game in the same vain as Tetris, Dr. Mario, Puzzle League or Yoshi’s Cookie.
You play as Mario (Or Luigi) whose task it is to flip around tiles as Yoshi drops them from above. Mario is able to flip tiles like dominoes as in Tetris Attack but you have a very small area for your tiles to go. To eradicate tiles you must get a pair of two or more vertically. Many of the dropping tiles contain monsters from the Mario franchise but Yoshi also drops egg halves which allow you to trap a pair of monsters between it. When a pair of the same monster is dropped between two halves of an egg it creates a big Yoshi which makes for fun times.
Graphically the game is quite nice, clearly nothing special as it is a NES game but you can certainly tell this game was made after Super Mario World as it contains graphics for Boo and the mushrooms which all look very SNES like.
As you can probably tell, Mario & Yoshi is quite a niche title and definitely isn’t up there with the greatest games in the franchise. It is a fun little puzzle game but with a lot of NES titles gets boring very quickly. I Personally would recommend Tetris Attack over this any day.
