Diddy’s Kong Quest is the sequel to the massively popular Rareware game Donkey Kong Country. After Donkey and Diddy Kong royally beat King K. Rool in the first game, King Rool decided the best way to bring back his ego levels would be to kidnap Donkey Kong and use him as a ransom to get back the massive hoard of bananas from Diddy.

Silly storyline aside (who really pays attention to narratives in platformers anyway?) Donkey Kong Country 2 takes what the original had and makes it so much better. Although removing some things such as hidden items in the ground and the riding of animals (instead, you can turn into them) we are given a much more immersing experience with Diddy and Dixie Kong. The second part in the series expands on the original by providing a lot more original locations; a volcano, a theme park and a pirate ship but to name a few, along with new enemies and moves (Dixie can fly Glide!).

With its strong pre-rendered graphics, Donkey Kong Country 2 was perhaps one of the most beautiful games available at the time and definitely help push along developers into realizing 3D graphics were the way forward.

As the pioneer of many fields (level design, graphics, sound), Donkey Kong Country 2 is clearly a memorable game for those that played it at the time. The series may not have been developed by Nintendo themselves, but Rare certainly helped Nintendo create a brand new franchise out of a character who wasn’t exactly a hero at the time. This game is perhaps one of the best platformers available on the system and is definitely worth picking up for 800 points right now.
