JuanotheGamer here with another exciting review. Have you ever recieved a game for a birthday present thinking “meh… another boring game. At least it will take up a few hours”? Well, that’s what happened to me when i received Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for the Wii. I thought it would suck. Boy, was I wrong.
Story
Dr. Doom is at it again. He is trying to conquer the entire universe with the powers of the Norse God Odin, and defeat S.H.I.E.L.D., and organization which you are a part of. You must gather various heroes from the Marvel universe to defeat Dr. Doom and his allies. Along the way you will unlock various characters and see enemies that you haven’t seen in a while. Besides this main quest there is a side quest, where one of the people on your team is a double agent and the rest of the heroes suspect the same.
Controls
Marvel: UA uses the motion-sensing capabilities of the Wiimote and Nunchuck. To attack you mimic different motions for each attack, or if you’re lazy, you can just press the A button. The Nunchuck is used to get enemies off your back, if they climb on you, and to grab and throw objects or enemies. You also use other motions to push objects, use special weapons and more. 9/10
Graphics
There’s two types of graphics in this game. Gameplay graphics and cutscene graphics. The gameplay graphics were very dissapointing. Somebody could ask you, “Hey who’s that hero?” and you wouldn’t even get close to knowing! But then there are the cutscene graphics. I have never, and I mean ever seen better looking Marvel characters on a non-HD console. The cutscenes are extremely detailed, and very well done. 6/10
Gameplay
This has to make up for the bad graphics. If you liked X-men Legends, then you will like this game. The gameplay is what brought me to think this is the best Wii game out there (and the fact that I’m a Marvel fan). You get 5 basic moves per character, several special moves and then one Super Move. You also get to fight many enemies from the Marvel universe ranging from Bullseye, to Rhino, To Galactus, to the evil Dr. Doom. You also get to play as your favorite super heroes from Sipderman, to Daredevil, to Human Torch, to Wolverine. The only sad thing is that Hulk is not included in this game. 9/10
Sound
No sounds come out of the Wiimote in this game. The voices for each character are well-done, whether it be heroes, enemies, or peeps we’ve never heard of. Sound for attacks is also nice and I like how the characters sometimes talk during battles (speacially Deadpool, he’s funny) and say random things like: “And now I’m better at doing whatever it is Wolverine does.” 7.5/10
Downs:
- Very bad gameplay graphics that could’ve been made better
- No sound from the Wiimote is kind of dissapointing
- No online
Ups:
- Very well done cutscenes
- Wiimote responds very well to motions
- With not only a main quest, but also a side quest and 3 difficulty modes, this game has good replay value
Conclusion
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, in my opinion, is well worth a rent, even a buy. If you are a Marvel fan, you should already have it, and if you don’t, GO BUY IT! If you’re not a Marvel fan, then this is a good way to pass the time for some of the major titles to come out.
Score: 8.5/10
