I’d say it’s been a good five months since the launch of the Nintendo Wii, and the results look pleasing. After the vicious rampage of camping out at Target, and hustling my way to buy some games, I can settle down on my comfy chair and play some games. Life is good.
As I would do all the time, I snaked my way through some miscellaneous websites on the internet, and I happen to trip over a rather interesting thread showing much relevance to the Wii. The thread starter went on by ranting his displeasure with the Wii games currently out, and his remorse for buying them in the first place. He also continued to complain about the future games that will come out to grace the Wii. According to his rant, there is a major game drought for the Wii. We all had to wait for March for games to begin with, and killer aps still don’t have a release date. So is he crazy or do Wii have a problem.
Since the Wii launch, I’ve only purchased two games: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Red Steel, both of which I reviewed on this site. People may muse a question regarding the topic: Do you not like the Wii games Cheng? Is the drought true? Nope, no, zip, nadda. There were actually a few games I wanted to get during the span of two months I didn’t buy anything. Games such as Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, Elebits, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, and Super Swing Golf. The only reason I didn’t purchase them because I was broke. But that matter is irrelevant to the topic I’m discussing. But seriously, I don’t think there was a drought to begin with. Call me crazy, but I came to realize this after seeing some of the releases for March and beyond.
To those who acknowledge the Wii has a drought, and is saying this in comparison to the Xbox 360, just stop in your tracks. I keep hearing the same redundant rants of people upset with the Wii games, and praising what the 360 has brought us. Oh my gosh! Lost Planet, Gears of War, Rainbow Six, Viva Pinata, Tony Hawk’s Project 8. The irony is that they are comparing the first-generation Wii games to the 2nd generation of Xbox 360 titles. If I remember correctly, the 360 didn’t even make out 20 titles at launch. The first RPG came out in March, and that was a cross-platform title! I mean it would just be more fair if we waited a year and then we can compare and contrast. Honestly!
Just a week ago, my brother and I picked up Rainbow Six Vegas to play for Spring Break. I loved the demo, and was desperate to play the real game. But..the game just didn’t suite me after a while, and I wanted to buy a Wii game. I wanted a shooter, a game that isn’t linear in gameplay, and would have a considerate length. So on the same day, I went out and bought The Godfather: Blackhand Edition. I’ve never played the last-gen version, so I looked forward for to trying out the new implated controls. I loved it. I could go on and list myriad of reasons I appreciate this game, but I’ll save that for when I review it. The point is that we actually got a good quality game, and there are still so much out there. SSX Blur is another, which was built from the ground up, and is for the hardcore gamers. Wii Play and Wario Ware are for those party animals, etc.
And to add more water to the well, there are so many games coming out that will appeal to the demography of gamers. Here is a list I mustered myself:
Shooters: Medal of Honor: Vanguard, Brothers in Arms: D-Day, Driver: Parallel Lines, Scarface: The World is Yours, Battalion Wars II, Manhunt II, Metroid Prime III.
Adventure/RPG: Super Paper Mario, Spider Man III, Escape From Bug Island, Fantastic 4, Treasure Island X, Agatha Christie: And Then There Was None, Dewy’s Adventure, Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn, FF Crystal Chronicals: Crystal Bearers, Sadness, Super Mario Galaxy, Alien Syndrome etc.
Fighting: Super Smash Brawl, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Pokemon: Battle Revolution, Godzilla: Unleashed, TNA Impact, Naruto: Clash of The Ninja MVZ
Action: Heatseeker, Blazing Angels, Resident Evil: UC, Prince of Persia: Rival Swords, Legend of the Dragon, Project H.a.m.m.e.r, Transformer, Alive, The Destiny of Zorro, No More Heroes.
Music/Party/Leasure: Mario Party 8, Tamagotchi: Party On!, Big Brain Academy, Cosmic Family, Line Rider,Mercury Meltdown Revolution, Space Station Tycoon, MySims, Animal Crossing Wii, Boogie, Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party, DK Bongo Blast, etc.
Sports: Madden 2008, Surf’’s Up, Blitz: The League, Dave Mirra: BMX Challenge, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, The Bigs, Mario Strikers: Charged, etc
Personally, I think people are impatient. There are so many games coming out, it’s hard to say there is a drought. Developers are still eager to create games for the Wii, and there are still so many unconfirmed projects being made. But you know what they say, you can’t please everybody.
