Capcom Believes the Wii Base is Younger Than the 360 and PS3

As with the launch, the Nintendo Wii is still the hot item to buy, even after the holidays. It seems their philosophy of targeting people of all ages has worked and we can see the empty shelves for ourselves.

Christian Svenssen (Capcom), Senior Director of Strategic Planning & Research had this to say about the theory:

We have more titles coming to Wii than what’s been announced HOWEVER, I must admit, many of them (outside of RE which has a long and successful history on Nintendo platforms) are not mature titles (edit: and by that I mean M rated titles) despite the fact that’s an area Capcom is known for.

By and large, I don’t see the Wii being home to a sizeable mature playerbase outside of some of the early adopters. I see it as being very, very broad with a family focus. If there is a “core player base” on Wii (and it’s might be so broad, there might be no such thing as “core”), within two years, it will probably be largely a younger player (or at least younger than 360 or PS3).

With games such as Manhunt 2 and No More Heroes, I’d think the Wii has enlarged their audience, but that’s just me. Stay tuned in 2007 to see if Capcom stick with their theory.

I personally don’t see how he has come to this conclusion, i have yet to see any evidence to suggest the wii player base to be any younger then the other consoles. Except for the marketing propaganda. I’m disappointed, that CEO of large game developers still persist to broadcast their OPINIONS on subjects that can be easily backed up by solid evidence, if they are serious about what they are saying.

thing is, the “early adopters” he speaks of are the so-called “hardcore gamers” who also are primarily the main audience who purchase Mature-rated games.

really, it’s kind of a chicken-egg argument. Capcom, if you make the games, people will buy the Wii, and in turn buy more games. we’ve already seen a wider audience, not just families, go for the Wii.
