Gain Ground is a top down Gun’n'Run shooter, and a top notch game. In 2348, to prevent the human fighting spirt from fading after an extended period of peace, the government develops the Gain Ground System to revive humanity’s fighting spirit. A glitch in the supercomputer controlling the system causes many people to be captured and held captive, now three of the remaining fighters must enter Gain Ground and rescue the people.

Simply outstanding for it’s time, graphics will show over fifteen enemy sprites, the fighter and all the volley between them, with absolutely no slowdown. Not to mention that are beautifully done, as well as special portraits for each character in your army. My only dislike is the unfortunate contrasting yellow “exit” rectangle on each stage. This game sets the mood excellently with it’s music, which the low pitched sound effects blend well with, not much I can knock here. The gameplay is pretty unique, it has a battle engine not unlike Dungeon Explorer, however, it focuses primarily on the fighting, the game is played out in stages rather than a large exploration game. More characters are found as prisoners in stages, and are gained by walking over the character and bringing it to the exit. It is also quite difficult, a single hit will down a character, but all is not lost if that happens, you have a chance to keep your ranks intact, if you can get back to where the character died and lead it to the exit, you can save them. However only one can be one, a new death will replace the old mini with a new one. Lastly make it quick, if you don’t defeat all the enemies in time, any character that hasn’t reached the exit by then will be lost. A really great game and definitely a favorite for the VC.
