“No Ghosts” says Nintendo

When will the problems end for Nintendo’s second N64 Virtual Console Release?

When the original game appeared on the Nintendo 64, there was an option to race against a ghost of yourself in time trial mode, so you could see exactally what you did to achieve you best time. This information was stored on a Controller Pak, which was the memory storage solution for the N64.

It now seems that the Wii’s Virtual Console is unable to emulate a controller pak, therefore the data for your best time can not be saved, and you can’t race your ghost.

“Due to unavoidable technical reasons unfortunately it is not possible to save ghost data from Mario Kart 64’s Time Trials in the Virtual Console version of the game. Nintendo has placed messages advising users about this before they download the game both when the Wii Shop Channel is first accessed and in the More Details tab on the individual game page.”

Lets hope that this soon gets fixed, or they stop being lazy and work out a way to make the Controller Pak feature work, after all, how will we be able to manage with future N64 Virtual Console releases?
